GLA:D Australia

GLA:D Australia

GLA:D, from ‘Good Life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark’, is an education and exercise program developed by researchers for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms. It was then brought to Australia in 2016 to help Australians with hip or knee Osteoarthritis.

How does it work

The GLA:D® program is an evidence-based education and exercise initiative for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. It includes two education sessions and twelve supervised group exercise sessions over six weeks, focusing on improving strength, movement control, and joint stability. Outcome measures are collected before starting, after completing, and again at 12 months, with data submitted to a national registry to monitor long-term progress in pain, function, and quality of life.

What are the benefits?

What are the benefits?

  • Reduced pain in hip or knee joints
  • Improved physical function and mobility
  • 3 in 4 people report clinically meaningful improvement in pain or quality of life at 12month follow-up
  • Decreased reliance on pain medication or analgesics
  • Slowed or reduced symptoms progression
  • 3 out of 4 people no longer wanting or needing joint replacement surgery at the 12month follow-up

What injuries/conditions will benefit from GLA:D?

  • While GLA:D® is primarily designed for osteoarthritis, benefits are seen for related knee conditions such as:
    • degenerative meniscal tears
    • patellofemoral pain

  • A physiotherapy assessment can help determine if the program is right for you.
